  • Just underpaid school staff? Aren't teachers also underpaid school staff? The problem isn't with guidance counselors. It's with our educational system. We're an anti-intellectual society, in part. Our schools are like factories. It's like drip coffee instead of tea bags. The water is forced through the coffee whereas the tea and allowed to brew. Here's another, more simple answer. Perhaps the guidance counselors want to prevent the students from making the same mistakes that led them to become guidance counselors.
  • As an educator, I'll point out that we don't do it for the money. Neither do they. Although, depending on the district, the guidance counselors could be making more than you think. Working in a school is not a job that people get because "they can't get anything better." They do it because it's what they want to do. It's their joy. I LOVE teaching. Love it. I don't wish the school year was over so I could have summer (though I am enjoying my summer). I look forward to my job. I am excited about it. Not the paycheck; the actual work. Counselors are in the same boat, largely. The counselors I know do it because they love it. They love working with kids, knowing that they make a difference. And most of the ones I know would not love being referred to as "just underpaid school staff."
