They don't. Each hair has a stopping point, but current hairstyles are decidedly shorter than nature intended.

Well the point is, hair will stop growing at a point. Even the hair we have on our heads. In fact, some people can't get it to grow very long at all. It does indeed depend on the person. But even hair that can grow to the floor will stop sometime.

I think it's genetics. I think we're just hard-wired that way.

Probably the same thing that keeps the lions mane a certain length and their body hair shorter, the same thing that gives Horses their tail hair and mane and short body hair... genetics. Long hair to cover our (originally naked) bodies without being hairy creatures like monkeys. Definitely smart on someones part.
