How come some ABers are a higher level than others who have more points than them?

A few weeks ago, Answerbag changed the points required to attain certain levels. In order to prevent users being upset, people kept their current level but it became harder to achieve these levels in the future (although the extreme high levels had the points gaps reduced slightly, I believe). So whereas in the past with my points total I could be in the 40's level-wise, if I had the same amount of points but had started after the points change then I would probably be a far lower level. This change-over has led to a mix which means that levels don't always correspond directly with rankings because users who have gained more points after the change see a slower effect on their level compared with gaining points before the change.
