Cool, fresh air helps gas atomize faster. This will ultimately create a hotter explosion inside the cylinder, producing more power per combustion cycle in the engine. This should ideally be done with other mods that allow more air flow through the engine. Remember, an engine is basically an air pump. The less power that is used moving air in and out of the engine, means more power at the wheels.

CAIs take air from a place cooler than under the hood of the car and that is good because cool air is denser air which in turn means more oxygen in a given volume of air which in turn allows more gas to be introduced into the cylinder and burnt. It also allows the engine to breath easier as CAIs tend to be less restrictive than stock airboxes. The end result is that at partial throttle you may see a slight increase in MPG as the engine won't waste gas making power merely to suck in air so more of the gas that DOES get to the engine will go towards moving your car. And if you stomp on it, having more and denser air will make more power, though your gas gauge may drop quicker too.

You have to be careful with these CAIs as they can often confuse your car's mass air flow meter and - in turn - throw off your fuel mixture balance. This will actually cause you to get worse mileage and less power. Though this only happens with some cars with very specifically designed (& with a very narrow range)fuel programs. Sometimes these will give you an extra hp or two and sometimes they will cost you ten. It's kind of a mixed bag.
