I don't know in detail, but (for example) all priests have to be approved by the government. The Vatican has had several rows with the Chines Government about the appointment of bishops in China. Generally, the churches have to register themselves, and their parishioners have to register as well. How far churches can go in attempting to contact non-members to spread their gospel is tightly controlled, and is not very far.
