  • Leslie. It means, "dweller of the gray fortress." A certain young Viking named "Leslie" had the great idea to go around, pick the loose rocks from the steep hillsides of the northern fiords of what is now Norway, and use them to build a causeway to a man made island in the middle of the narrow sliver of sea ... it would be a good naval base and would be easy to defend from an army ... but he could not get any support or aid to do the labour of rock picking ... so he got a small Viking ship, a small crew, and he started raiding small Danish villages, taking all precious metals, jewels, and kidnapping all the strong healthy children, but killing everyone else ... then he made the children pick the rocks and he used the raided wealth to buy food to feed them ... as they cleared the slopes, they built homes cut into the rock wall, and dumped the rock, in a narrow path, into the sea, making a low road out into the water, then made an island with a huge fortress on it, then made towers with catapults all around the edges of the fiord, THEN he gave the land to the slave children and to this day raindeer and grasses grow along the old port of Hammerfast. The guy that did that was known both as "Leslie the Great", for making barren land in the Arctic into an agriculturally thriving place with a strong military defense, and also as "Leslie the Terrible", for having raided, murdered, kidnapped children into slavery, and making them clear the slopes of loose rocks.
