It is not the law that primarily prevents me from stealing, but the knowledge that it would harm someone else. Point me to something that no one owns or needs, the lack of which would effect no one, and something that would be legal to take, and I will consider it. However, that would probably be considered gleaning and not stealing.

If stealing was legal, why would I only be able to take one thing? Regardless, even if it was legal, it would still be immoral.

If it was legal then it wouldn't be called stealing. It would be no different then picking up a handful of dirt out of the front lawn of McDonald's and not checking to see how much it is on the dollar menu. (I wouldn't recommend eating it though.)
