I would go to an employment agency and ask them to check it out for you. They might also be able to find you a job. What you can do about it depends on the law in your area. You can probably look it up.

In the UK the data protection act. In the UK if an employer has given a poor referral without proof of wrongdoing it come sunder victimisation and one can sue for loss of earnings if you dont get the job because of it. Not sure how it works in the US
