Yes, I think that holds true most of the time. Sorry it's not a very good answer but agreeing with you is all I got!

Erm, not at all - I've never heard of that before either : P Most people have some kind of pain or inner problems, but I don't think the career of 'comedian' is likely to attract more of them than any other job?

I have always beleived that too..making others laugh is a way of coping.

from what I have heard from comedians on documantaries and such, they aren't necessarily unhappy or depressed people but they get a high off of laughs. They live for that small amount of time on stage and when the crowd is good, they make people laugh they get a lot out of it...but if you have ever seen a comedian come off stage after a bad set you can see how badly they sometimes take it. I thik it's just a form of adrenaline junky..musicians, comedians, performers, just about anyone who gets up on a stage does it for those reasons and probably feels the same afterwards. But I will say that to be funny I think you have to be pretty cynical.

Interesting question. When I studied sidereal astrology a hundred years ago, one of the things that an instructor I had pointed out was that statistically comedians tended to have prominent Saturn placements in their charts and aspects. In a nutshell, very simplistically, this usually points to deep emotional pain.

It's really a sad, but startling correlation. I think your analysis is sound, but it can go much deeper for many comedians - from parental abuse, to bullying, to racism/sexism... Here's a webcast with some expert opinions on the matter, with reference to comedians such as Robin Williams and Jim Carrey: http://www2.healthtalk.com/go/mental-health/depression/webcasts/after-the-laughter-comedians-and-depression

I think it could be that, but all people have their different reasons for anything. Maybe some people just want to do something they love. Good Question!

That would seem to be the case of several high-profile comedians (like Richard Lewis) but I am not sure it is any different from the rest of the general population. Good, thought-provoking question though.
