Why is rail travel cost as much as,or more then,the cost of flying,in many ways rail travel is much more fun?

I have no definite answer for you, but my first thought was the salaries of the people who work on the service...on a plane, you're paying for the pilot, flight attendants, etc for a few hours, but by rail you're paying for them for a longer period of time, so it doesn't become much cheaper.
