  • K2 isstands in the Karakoram portion of the Himalayas. It is called "K2" because it is the second peak of the Karakoram. The other peaks were originally named K1, K3, K4 and K5, but have since been named Masherbrum, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum II and Gasherbrum I. Click here for more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K2
  • K2 takes its unassuming name from the surveyor’s notation of the peak – “K” for Karakorum, and “2” because it was the second peak listed. It is known locally as “Chogori” – meaning “Great Mountain,” and as “Mount Godwin-Austin” [named for the British Surveyor-General of India who oversaw the first systemmatic topographic survey of the Indian subcontinent.] But K2 has earned another name more descriptive of its legacy - “The Savage Mountain.” Modified slightly from http://www.k2climb.net/story/stories/K2KillerMountainsAnExplorersWebseriesNov42003.shtml
