  • go to the doctor, not to be mean or anything but they would have the best/worthy opinion. not to be saying that fellow answerbaggers wouldn't know or not....it's just an easy way to get an answer that you can go off of
  • Just by reading your questions and answers, I assume you are a teenager. And by reading your comments to Andy-B, you have no reason to consider cosmetic surgery for this. Your question indicates they are abnormal, but then your comments state you simply don't like it. I would imagine that any reputable plastic surgeon would not operate. I know a broken rib is very painful. I would imagine augmentation of the ribs would be very painful as well. Not knowing you, I can't tell you to be more confident in who you are. You already may be. But altering your ribs sounds very risky and unnecessary to me.
  • Cant you turn into a feature like an Ipod shelf when your at the beach?
  • I have the same porblem and I, like yourself plaidsANDstripes do not want to go to the doctors. my motto about this is: 'it does not hurt and i'm not going to die from this, so i'm going to forget about it.'
  • Gain weight.
  • Hey, mine too! For me, it's because I am thin. There is no need for you to worry; it has not affected me.
  • I'm wondering if maybe it's because of the way you sit or sleep? Maybe you're not sitting straight or sleeping in an awkward position. I would ask a medical professional and get their opinion on the matter.
  • hello. i have the same problem both my ribs sick out but one sticks out more. i hate it but i havent gone to see a doctor as im only 14 but when i get older and my ribs dont get better i will consider going to the doctor. do you have MSN or something ?
  • The teenaged son of a lady at work had this condition - actually on one side his chest stuck a little out, and on the other not quite far enough. If I remember, I think it was the not-far-enough side that could cause lack of stamina, since there wasn't as much room for the lungs to expand. It was the too-far side that was the cause for a little medical concern, but I don't remember why. Just make a doctor's appt and s/he'll fill you in.
  • hey..i know this is almost like a year later, but i have the same thing. i was born with the abnormal left lower rib, and it's always stuck further out than the normal right lower rib. i asked my doc if there were any risks associated with not having a normal rib, and he said absolutely not. however, if you want to get it fixed cosmetically, it can be done (he told me that, too)..i decided against it..although it feels weird sometimes, it's a unique feature to the body that you get to show everyone.. lol
  • This is wierd, but so do I. I thought maybe I fell as a baby or something, as it is kinda unique, these lower left ribs sticking out like that in a strange little bump. I wonder if there is some kind of genetic link... Maybe we should form a new club, what do you think we should call it..? :)
  • Mine too after reading everyones response I am not feeling to bad about it now, Finally I am not the only one! lol
  • yes there is, but it requirs surgery, i know this because i have the same problem, but on my right side (it's either cause by bone deformities or growth of extra cartilidge.) or if you don't want surgery, there is a brace that you can wear for 14-20 hours a day for a few year. it sound awfull but they have better results than surgery, and it doesn't requir to crack your sturnum to get it back in place. the other good thing about the brace that it is molded to you're body (it is removable)and can hide under almost any clothing.
  • you can se a chiropractic to see if a=everything is fine
  • Both of my ribs stick out, but my leftv side is worse. It seems to be all I notice now when I look in the mirror :( I would love to have it fixed. Mine sticks out because I have scoliosis. The left side of my back actually sticks out a tad too. If your back sticks out, you might have scoliosis also. Where can I find this brace that fixes your ribs???
  • you have something called pigeons breast, 1 out of 400 people in America has it, so it's pretty common. i have it and i went to the doctors to see what it was. they say that it's usually developed when you grow older and it gets worse because your body starts to grow that way. it is cause by scoliosis, too much growth of cartilage, or bone deformities. You can get it fix, but it's not life threatening. you can either have surgery, that requires cracking your sternum and cutting off the extra bone or cartilage, or you can wear a brace for about a year and a half. (I prefer this because it is molded to the body and it hides under almost every clothing.)
  • Hey Guys. Was Browsing The Net For My Girlfriend As She Has The Problems With Her Ribs, But Also Recently Found Out She Has Scoliosis. Im Pretty Sure, After A Bit Of Research That Scoliosis Is The Entire Problem To This, Or It Might Be The Result From The Ribs. I Tell Her That She Is Unique With It, Thats Shes Special But Now Weve Found Out Theirs Others, Like You. Its Virtually Invisible Under Clothing But She Would Never Wear A Bikini Or Such. She Also Has A Rather Large Dip In The Center Just Below Her Breasts. She Uses This To Hide All Her Chocolate While At Work :P Cheeky Bugger! =D Shes 18, Didnt Know If It Were More Common In Teens? Mitch. x
  • heyy; I dont know without surgery if it could be fixed.. but its good to know im not the only one with this question. my left rib is like .. it sticks out kinda odd whereas the right one is rounded & right.. idk i hate it though; specially summer season or a shirt thats a little tight fittin; you can see :/ err. Im 19, almost 20 & known since I was 5 but didnt get a brace b/c i stopped growin when i was 14; so yeahh; but have a shoe lift from left leg shorter than the other by 2 and somethin inches - guess the left side is just odd. ha :]
  • My 15 year old son hs the same problem with his left rib, he complains about it all the time, he doesn't like the looks of it. I'm glad to have found this Q&A as it will make him feel better tht he's not the only one.
  • I have it too, but mine just developed recently. Also, when I sit straight up for too long, like driving, it makes me hurt. I went to my doc and had an MRI, they couldn't find anything. I think that my ribcage as somehow twisted to that side since I have a medium case of scoliosis. I shoul probably go to a chiropractor and see what's up.
  • Mine does too and it is getting worse. I am 51 years old and have a mild case of scoliosis, and some spinal degeneration. I think it is probably caused by that. I had an MRI and the doc didn't find anything wrong. I think I will go back to my chiro, because sometimes it really makes me hurt behind the rib.
  • I have the same problem, I went to the doctor and chiropracter to try and fix this. Theres nothin they can do unlees its damaging any of your organs, I wear a tank top instead of a bathing suit top to swim. it sucks!
  • I just read an article suggesting a corset could move the ribs straight
  • I have exactly the same problem. Ive been to my doctor twice, first I was told it was a pulled muscle???? then I was told to get an x-ray, went to the hospital and the specialist refused to see me as "an x-ray won't help". I would really love to get mine sorted as it sticks out loads, does anyone know where I can get a brace without going through a doctor as they clearly don't care. Thanks
