The upper age is between 1 and three. By then the child is well established on solids and can take normal dairy.
I weaned mine around their first birthday, but other women around me fed longer or shorter, as their lives dictated.
The important thing is, you should not be pressured into stopping by those around you. It is the best thing for your baby.
Formulas may be readily available, but there is more to breastfeeding than simply the nutrition. THere is a bond forged between mum and bub that can never be broken, and which is one of the sweetest experiences a woman can ever have.
It also builds the baby's immune system, and stimulates brain activity.
It is also sooo much easier than having to do all the work to make up bottles, not to mention cheaper.

More people use formula now than ever, however the major increase in usage has really been in the United States. The World Health Organization strongly encourages mothers to breastfeed as long as possible, and recommends it up age 2 years, if possible. In most countries outside of the US, the numbers for women that breastfeed are far greater than in the US, and women in other countries also breastfeed for longer.

The American Medical Association believes that it should be recommended for a baby to be breastfed until 6 months, then should start solid foods, but with continued breastfeeding until 12 months, when they can switch to cow's milk.

However, in the US, people look at you as if you are a freak if they see you breastfeeding in public, and expect you to be wielding a bottle, which is a real shame. I was always very discreet and never showed any skin, but still got dirty looks, and eventually made a coverup that said on it "Breasts are FOR breastfeeding," because I was so disgusted by the American attitude towards women in that situation (and I'm American !). I even had my own sister-in-law tell me (in a fast-food restaurant) that I should "do that in the bathroom." To which I responded "If you sit on the toilet in the restroom and eat your meal, than I will feed my daugther in there, too." She just didn't get it, and said "Why would I want to do that ?" Some people !
