Considering the historical development of religious philosophy, whose philosophies do you think most advanced Western religious thought? Explain your answer.

Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle no doubt got the ball rolling with the general idea of thought provoking ideas. Religiously, I'd look at the early church fathers of the Catholic church, considering they are also the one's who put together the bible as well. Their influence regarding that matter alone would be the biggest advancement, as far as religious terms.

Paul-- The authorship of his letters are not seriously disputed and they are THE authority establishing Christian doctrine and practices. Martin Luther-- He is credited with igniting the Reformation and Counter-Reformation which in turn created the university system which gave birth to The Enlightenment. Begin your research by checking the beginning of all the oldest universities. The Sorbonne, Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, etc. etc. etc. all began as 17th century Christian enterprises driven by the Reformation and built upon a premise that understanding creation(science) led to a greater understanding the creator(God)
