It is a very old slang term for a Canadian, derived from the words Canada and Chinook. The Chinooks are a western aboriginal people, who lived in what is now British Columbia. The cartoon character, Johnny Canuck, first appeared in the 19th century. In some ways, he played a role similar to that of Uncle Sam in the US. Among his many skills, he helped defeat the Nazis in WW2.
