Yeah formatting erases everything on the Hard drive. Now if the virus is a boot virus in the BIOS of the system this would not fix the problem. Think of formatting as a painting. You are paint a picture and then some one comes and takes a brush with red paint. They start to smear it all over you paint. That is the virus. What formatting does is takes a roller with white paint and goes over the whole canvas restoring it to white. Now that DVD you have would restore the painting to a certain point.
