I haven't seen a gas station attendant for a least a decade! But if there was one who filled up my car and also checked the oil and washed the windows, I'd be so overwhelmed I would definitely tip that person.

Yeah I tip most people who tend to me...as long as they are not completely incompetent or rude.

I almost never see this any longer. Until about a year ago here was on gas station/convenience store in the town where I live that allowed an old retired black man to help people with their fuel and wash their windows if they liked. He was required to ask so as not to be intrusive to those that preferred to self-serve. He was a very nice gentle old man and I always allowed him to do it for me even though I needed no help, and I always tipped him well. Sometimes as much as $5. I also enjoyed visiting with him while he put gas in my vehicle. This question makes me wonder what happened to him, I am going to ask.

I (female) managed and pumped gas at a Sunoco station for a year, back in the 80's. I was never offered a tip not did I expect one. Actually it never even crossed my mind to tip a gas station attendent until my son told me last week that he always tipped if someone pumped his gas. I told him it was ridiculous. That is what brought me to this site. I try never to pump my own gas! And I never tip nor will I ever. That is the persons job and that is what his employer pays him for. Just my opinion.

I never thought about it. I have not seen a gas attendant since I have been able to drive.

just moved to oregon; they pump your gas here. i was told by local residents that since they only earn minimum wage, you should give them $1 if they speak to you more than a grunt, wash your windows, and are exceptionally nice - just like any waitress. or if it's raining. it's odd how we have come to EXPECT someone to wait on us and NOT think of tipping for the service.

ALWAYS. If I swing into the 1 gas station I know of that has attendants, Its because I'm in a hurry or I feel really lazy. I ALWAYS tip! usually 2 or 3 bucks.

Not if all they do is fill the tank, If they check fluids Etc sure they deserve a tip.

No. All gas stations in NJ are required to have someone pump the gas for you. The ones that should be tipped though are the ones that wash your windshield or do something beyond the basic minimum required by law.

They should be so lucky. I'd rather pump the gas myself. If they jump in and decide they should do it, I'm actually peeved.

Here in IL, we no longer have gas attendants and haven't for years and years. But, I don't remember anyone tipping them.

That depends on how cold it is, if it's below zero I always give them a couple bucks and tell them to go get something warm to drink.

my family owns a gas station/convenient store and our employees are like family to us. not only do they provide excellent service, they are extremely respectful and kind to the customers so yes, they do get tips daily. they are the hardest hardworking bunch ive ever seen. i don't care if its their job and thats what they get paid to do, there's something called appreciation of hardwork. Its not as easy as it looks. I think both NJ and Oregon need to start being self service. Maybe that way, people will know its no fun getting out of car when its 10 degrees out or when there's a heat wave or simply not having an attendant pump your gas anymore.

Sure if they offer to have a peek at fluid levels or mention a tire is a little low. Especially here in winter. I was a gas jockey as a kid.It's not the best paying job in the world, not to mention some of the abuse that gets heaped on these guys for gas prices that they have no control over so if that attendant still has the smile and willingness to go a little extra at the end of a day, he deserves a tip in my books.

Wow I didnt know people still did that!!! Yeah I have never seen one!!! I have always pumped my own gas.
