At the Cafe, they spent half of what was left, then they spent the remaining $5. So they had $10 when they reached the Cafe. At the gift shop, before they spent that extra $5 they must have had $15, and that was the other half of what was left after the other purchase. That meant they had $30 at the gift shop. The same method works for the first shop.
