Being involved with someone in a personal way. I can have a relationship with my parents and I can have a relationship with a partner. There are varying grates of interconnectivity which one must consider when defining the variety of relationships that one can be involved in.

There are at lease two kind of definitions of a relationship. One is what other people think about what they see, and they define it. The other is what the people in the relationship (assuming you are talking about people)think about it, and that is their definition. If you are talking about a "relationship" as being interaction between two or more objects, people or not, then a description of the "interaction" is what defines it.
