As opposed to the phrase "lol," I use smiley faces when I actually *am* smiling or frowning or winking, etc. And it helps show sarcasm, for example "I hate you so much right now" sounds pretty bitter. But "I hate you so much right now =]" is obviously with a joking tone added to it, although you can not hear the inflection in the person's voice. So, no. I don't hate it.

I don't mind it. Not sure what the @--'--,-- is though! I find it helps to convey the tone you normally convey using facial expressions when in person. Type is a very impersonal way to communicate, the emoticons make it more personal.

Some people just like to draw pictures instead of typing sentences to show how they feel. |||||| °¿° .~ ... no, I do not hate it ... ...... °¿° .~ ||||||| o¿o . 0 ...... -¿° .~

(Dear God, I bet you have a terrible hatred towards myself and my answers! Hahah.) No. Probably because I do the first two. A lot. I don't know what that 3rd thing would have to do with the answer. Maybe in some cases... "Oh, yes, I have ADD. Here is a rose..." I use 'emoticons' to make myself seem less uptight when answering/commenting/inquiring/what have you. Sometimes, words just don't do it simply. I mean, at least for me. I can be very verbose and over-elaborate on everything, so instead of writing how I feel and boring everyone to death, I use "=]" or "=[" to get the genral point across.

Hehe, I do it aaalll the time, so no I don't hate it ; ) They're called 'emoticons', they symbolise facial expressions and emotions, like : ) (or as you put it, =) is a smiley face, it means whoever says it is happy or just smiling... They're useful because if people understand them, it makes online text conversations much better, because it then includes kinda facial expressions / can clarify otherwise vague emotions, etc Like, when someone says something which could be taken as either sarcastic or dead serious, how can you tell them apart online? It's hard - so people use emoticons, usually the ' ; ) ' one, which is a winking face *shrugs* They annoy some people, and help others (personally they only annoy me when people use them in stories or work they're submitting and stuff, hehe - in an online conversation they're great {same goes for all that 'u' meaning 'you' stuff, online in conversation it's fine, in a typed document it's annoying})

No way i use them constantly :) <---see

No, actually. I love them! =) (I'll decline to answer the second half, as it's already been answered.)
