- Scott Joplin's music is great -- i liek a lot of his others better than The Entertainer but I agree it is outstanding. :) [ In my opinion, a lot of credit needs to be given to the late Marvin Hamlisch for re-introducing Joplin to the world in the score for "The Sting" movie. ]

- Genau! (Sure enough!) I think that's where I'd first heard it. I used to be able to play the whole thing, but what with loosing the music & a not-quite-accurate memory for the mid 2 sections, I can only play a "Triss condensed version" at this point! lol!

- "Easy Winners," "Elite Syncopations" ( just for the incredible last section! it is tremendous!), "Swipesy:Cake Walk," "Solace" ( in The Sting, too ), "Heliotrope Bouquet," "The Cascades(Rag)" - - those would be the ones that jump out at me. I have a complete collection of his piano solos. And ever since THeSting, I have played them off and on. What I like so well about " The Entertainer" is that is encompasses so much of Joplin's strengths as a composer into one piece. I find it a difficult one to play accurately all the way through. :) And it is NOT to played fast. :) I hear so many people play it too quickly - - Joplin's note right on the music says, " not fast." But you know all this already, probably. :)Thanks for your response to my comment.[ tapatio -- cool that you like The Entertainer, too -- good choice! ]

- I just got done taking some time in playing through my book -- it is "Complete Ragtime Piano Solos" by Scott Joplin. They're in their original form, not edited or changed from what I can tell. I already got up to five that I really like, so, before I made it more difficult on myself, now I'm narrowing it down to one as my 2d favorite [ though The Entertainer is not my # 1 favorite, sorry. :) ] For a purely Scott Joplin-only composition ( more than several he co-wrote with other composers) my second favorite to play is " The Cascades: A Rag. " From a co-authored piece ( Joplin and Arthur Marshall ) I like to play " Swipesy:Cake Walk." I rarely , if ever, just listen to Joplin music. I enjoy most sitting at the piano and playing. I hope this helps! :) Good luck with all your playing of other composers, too.

- Thanks, Trissinger! :) [ I don't mean to bug - - but here is more info on the book. It was published by "Charles Hansen II Music & Books of California, Inc." ( 2030 S. Sepulveda Blvd. , West Los Angeles, CA USA 90025 ) The number on it is "R045." I bought it probably around 1975, so it may not be around still, don't know. Also, a very interesting Note from The Publishers is on the inside front cover -- especially concerning the tile of the book! " These 43 titles represent most of Scott Joplin's works. Due to copyright restrictions, several titles are not included. " So much for 'Complete' ha! The lovely " Solace " is not included in the book. I'm sure you'll have no trouble getting your hands on Joplin's piano stuff, even if it's not this exact book. :) My book is literally in pieces - - not even bound anymore, just loose pages that I've somehow kept in order for decades! Ha! I should get it rebound. ]

The best piano song I have heard of is actually not the best piano song to anyone but me..The song Music box dancer by frank mills is the one I play before I play anything of more substance..or if I am in a down kinda mood..whenever I just want to kinda go out of focus for a little bit. So, though not The best..the best for me :)

- Thanks! This past month I took up piano lessons once again mainly to learn that piece, which is what I've been doing over the past few weeks --- its only at a Royal Conservatory of Music (Canadian) grade 6 level, so its quite attainable for me. Ahh, lovely... :)

Non-Contemporary(Baroque, Classical, Romantic) music is so boring. I can't believe so many people pick it.

I definitely agree with the people who said that 'River Flows in You' by Yiruma is a fantastic piece. 'La Valse D'Amelie' by Yann Tiersen is another popular contemporary piece that many say is the best.

Each of the two were my favorite piece for a time ('River Flows in You' replacing 'Valse'), but they are plagued by the same problems. Despite being mostly fantastic, Both have terrible endings (Oftentimes their artists actually improvise a different ending to the piece) , and are boring, simple pieces to play.

I moved on to Zohar's (not his real name) piano arrangement of 'Corridors of Time' by Yasunori Mitsuda. This piece is absolutely fantastic, and it blew me away when I heard it. It is challenging and ridiculously fun to play once you get the hang of it. It is diverse and contains a myriad of emotions, with a solid ending, which seems rare for contemporary pieces. Truly a masterpiece of a song.

The Sunken Cathedral (La cathédrale engloutie) by Claude Debussy, also sometimes called The Engulfed Cathedral. There are a lot of orchestral versions but I prefer the original piano. It's about a cathedral which occationally rises up from the water off the coast of a mythical island named Ys near France.
