  • .. from this guy?
  • Stuart Berg Flexner in I hear America Talking (1976), favored the explanation that it derives from "no spik Ingles"
  • Spic is short for Hispanic.
  • it is short for spic and span because latinos are stereotypically in the cleaning business. just a guess
  • SPIC originally referred to mestizos or creoles: SPanish,Indian,Colored. How and when it became a common derogatory term ,I don't know. The term is more for Carribean hispanics. The original derogatory term for Mexicos by North Americans was "greasers".
  • Maybe from Spic and Span. Perhaps, Hispanic people used to do a lot of cleaning job? Hispanic & Spanish
  • Well, In Canada, we always meant it as....Spanish People In Canada. Not necessarily from Spain but for all hispanics.
  • It's a derogatory word for North Mexicans that cross the Rio Grand River into Texas. A kind of class of people.
  • THE RIGHT ANSWER IS : THE TERM SPIC WAS CREATED IN THE IMMIGRATION OFFICE TO ORGANIZE THE MAJORITY OF APPLICATIONS COMING IN DURING THE LATE 40'S AND EARLY 50'S. THE TERM SPIC SHORT FOR SPANISH POLISH ITALIAN AND CHINESE WOULD HELP THE EMPLOYEES OF THE IMMIGRATION OFFICE EXPEDITE THE PAPER WORK AND SPEED UP THE PROCESS. WHY THE WORD SPIC STUCK WITH PEOPLE OF SPANISH BACKGROUND IS ANOTHER QUESTION,BUT THE TERM WAS FIRST USED WITH MEXICANS,SOME OF THE FIRST SPANISH IMMIGRANTS. USING THE WORD SPIC AGAINST A PERSON FROM PUERTO RICO WOULD NOT MAKE SENSE SINCE PUERTO RICANS ARE EXEMPT FROM ANY IMMIGRATION REQUIREMENTS DUE TO THEIR COMMONWEALTH STATUS SO THEY DO NOT NEED GREEN CARDS OR VISAS TO TRAVEL THEY HAVE THE SAME TRAVELING RIGHTS AS AMERICANS .
  • Nice try ignoranuses (and yes i know i misspelled this as it was intentional) so many people in our society today are ignorant assholes who don't ever take the time to actually read or educate themselves and rely on the here-say that was ingrained upon their tiny minds in high school and continue to further the degredation of our children by passing such idiocy on to them. a British idiom first recorded in 1579, and used in Samuel Pepys's diary. A spic was a spike or nail, a span was a very fresh wood chip, and thus the phrase meant clean and neat and all in place, as in being nailed down. The "span" in the idiom also is part of "brand span new", now more commonly rendered "brand spanking new", and has nothing to do with the words "Spanish" or "Hispanic". THIS is where not only the term spic came from but also the name of the product used in cleaning. Looks like the english were the "queens" of cleaning if you ask me. Out of a total population of 29 million, an estimated one and a half million people worked as domestic servants in England and Wales during the period 1850 to 1914. Till 1921, more than a million women were still in service as house maids and other household help. Different Types of Maids in History: Lady's Maid: The lady's maid was normally the senior-most maid in the household who reported directly to the lady of the house, and represented the other maids under employment. Her duties included maintaining the wardrobe and accessories of the household lady. Lady’s maids were also generally expert needlewomen and hairdressers. Though the job could be challenging sometimes, they enjoyed a higher social status than the other servants and earned more money. Chambermaids: Chambermaids performed a number of duties which included typical domestic chores such as cooking, ironing, washing, cleaning the house, grocery shopping, taking care of household pets and children etc. Parlor Maid: The main function of the parlor maid was to take care of the parlor, or reception room and the table, and to answer and welcome the door when the butler was not around. Nursery Maid: The nursery maid reported to the nanny or the children’s nurse and her main duties included chores related to the cleaning and maintaining of the nursery. She was also to assist the nurse in other chores when needed. Kitchen Maid: The kitchen maid reported to the Head Cook and ranked below the cook in the household help hierarchy. She could also become the assistant cook depending on experience and expertise. Scullery Maid: As an assistant to the kitchen maid, the scullery maid was the lowest ranking maid in the household. Her duties included cleaning of the floor, stoves, sinks, pots and dishes. They are more commonly known as “Hall Girls” in the United States.
