The JWs have no grasp of history, sorry. Nor do they ever expect or encourage any of their followers to actually read the original documents and see how wrong they are. They were all trinitarian.

Many church leaders before Constantine spoke out against the Trinity and Jehovah’s Witnesses have made this known. These NON WITNESS publications were quoted by the Watchtower before: Tertullian, who died about 230 C.E., taught the supremacy of God. He observed: “The Father is different from the Son (another), as he is greater; as he who begets is different from him who is begotten; he who sends, different from him who is sent.” He also said: “There was a time when the Son was not. . . . Before all things, God was alone.” Hippolytus, who died about 235 C.E., said that God is “the one God, the first and the only One, the Maker and Lord of all,” who “had nothing co-eval [of equal age] with him . . . But he was One, alone by himself; who, willing it, called into being what had no being before,” such as the created prehuman Jesus. Origen, who died about 250 C.E., said that “the Father and Son are two substances . . . two things as to their essence,” and that “compared with the Father, [the Son] is a very small light.” Summing up the historical evidence, Alvan Lamson says in The Church of the First Three Centuries: “The modern popular doctrine of the Trinity . . . derives no support from the language of Justin [Martyr]: and this observation may be extended to all the ante-Nicene Fathers; that is, to all Christian writers for three centuries after the birth of Christ. It is true, they speak of the Father, Son, and . . . holy Spirit, but not as co-equal, not as one numerical essence, not as Three in One, in any sense now admitted by Trinitarians. The very reverse is the fact”. Some who support the trinity doctrine are historical revisionists. Their attempts fall short of course as it becomes obvious that the early so called “church fathers” grafted this pagan doctrine into their belief system centuries after Jesus ascended to heaven. I have spoken to many of Christendom’s church goers about the trinity and they can not explain it either. Actually the trinity seems to come in about 18 different flavors.

From a historical reference point, I think it needs to be pointed out that the early church did not teach the Trinity, and that it was partially accepted at the Council of Nicea. Many at that time did not agree with it, and were called trouble makers and heratics. Through out time devout Christians who absolutely believe in salvation through the Grace of God alone are called heratics because they do not believe in the Trinity. It is not just the Jehovahs Witnesses who believe this way.

If you are a Christian shouldn’t your highest authority be Jesus and the Bible. You will not find Jesus teaching the trinity nor will you find any mention of that word by anyone in the entire Bible. As a follower of Christ shouldn’t that be enough for you to throw out trinity no matter what anybody says. Muslims too reject trinity because not only does the Holy Qur’an (HQ) not sanction it but the HQ actually advises Christians to reject it. It says in HQ 4:171 “O People of the Scripture! Do not exaggerate in your religion nor utter aught concerning God save the truth. The Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, was a MESSENGER (Prophet) of God, and His WORD which He (God)conveyed unto Mary, and a SPIRIT from Him (God). So believe in (the One True) God and His messengers, and SAY NOT "trinity". Cease! (it is) better for you! God is only One God. Far is it removed from His Transcendent Majesty that he should have a son. His is all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. And God is sufficient as Defender.”

The Watchtower (i.e. the JW's) aren't telling the truth. But see for yourself. Funny how the Watchtower mysteriously managed to avoid sharing any of these passages--- Clement--- "I understand nothing else than the Holy Trinity to be meant; for the third is the Holy Spirit, and the Son is the second, by whom all things were made according to the will of the Father.” From--- (The Stromata, Book 5, Chapter 14) See it yourself--- http://www.ccel.org/ccel/schaff/anf02/Page_468.html (it's the last 5 lines on the page) Tertullian--- Before looking at thequotes of Tertullian, it's worth noting that the Watchtower (i.e. JW's) states in their "Should you believe in the Trinity" booklet--- "The Catholic Encyclopedia also comments: "In Scripture there is as yet no single term by which the Three Divine Persons are denoted together. The word [tri'as] (of which the Latin trinitas is a translation) is first found in Theophilus of Antioch about A. D. 180. . . . Shortly afterwards it appears in its Latin form of trinitas in Tertullian."" The Watchtower then goes on to say--- "However, this is no proof in itself that Tertullian taught the Trinity." REALLY? Given the following quotes of Tertullian, it's somewhat difficult to doubt that he believed in and taught the Trinity... Tertullian--- "this is the rule of faith which I profess; by it I testify that the Father, and the Son, and the Spirit are inseparable from each other, and so will you know in what sense this is said. Now, observe, my assertion is that the Father is one, and the Son one, and the Spirit one, and that They are distinct from Each Other. This statement is taken in a wrong sense by every uneducated as well as every perversely disposed person, as if it predicated a diversity, in such a sense as to imply a separation among the Father, and the Son, and the Spirit." From--- (Against Praxeus, Chapters 8-9) See it yourself--- http://www.ccel.org/ccel/schaff/anf03/Page_603.html (at beginning of the last paragraph) Also--- “…All are of One, by unity (that is) of substance; while the mystery of the dispensation is still guarded, which distributes the Unity into a Trinity, placing in their order the three Persons – the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost: three, however, not in condition, but in degree; not in substance, but in form; not in power, but in aspect; yet of one substance, and of one condition, and of one power, inasmuch as He is one God, from whom these degrees and forms and aspects are reckoned, under the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.” From--- (Against Praxeus, Chapter 2) See it yourself--- http://www.ccel.org/ccel/schaff/anf03/Page_598.html (towards the end of the page) Also--- “…the Father and the Son are demonstrated to be distinct; I say distinct, but not separate….” From--- (Against Praxeus, Chapter 11) See it yourself--- http://www.ccel.org/ccel/schaff/anf03/Page_605.html (upper middle of second column) Also--- “…all the Scriptures attest the clear existence of, and distinction in (the Persons of) the Trinity, and indeed furnish us with our Rule of faith….” From--- (Against Praxeus, Chapter 11) See it yourself--- http://www.ccel.org/ccel/schaff/anf03/Page_606.html (first paragraph) Also--- "I must everywhere hold one only substance in three coherent and inseparable (Persons)….” From--- (Against Praxeus, Chapter 12) See it yourself--- http://www.ccel.org/ccel/schaff/anf03/Page_607.html (bottom of first column) Also--- "we...indeed definitively declare that Two Beings are God, the Father and the Son, and, with the addition of the Holy Spirit, even Three..” From--- (Against Praxeus, Chapter 13) See it yourself--- http://www.ccel.org/ccel/schaff/anf03/Page_608.html (bottom third of first column) Hippolytus--- "As far as regards the power, therefore, God is one. But as far as regards the economy there is a threefold manifestation, as shall be proved afterwards when we give account of the true doctrine. From--- (Against the Heresy of One Noetus, Section 3) See it yourself--- http://www.ccel.org/ccel/schaff/anf05/Page_226.html (end of second column) Also--- "For us, then, it is sufficient simply to know that there was nothing contemporaneous with God. Beside Him there was nothing; but. He, while existing alone, yet existed in plurality." From--- (Against the Heresy of One Noetus) See it yourself--- http://www.ccel.org/ccel/schaff/anf05/Page_227.html (bottom of the first column) Also--- "If, then, the Word was with God, and was also God, what follows? Would one say that he speaks of two Gods? I shall not indeed speak of two Gods, but of one; of two Persons however, and of a third economy (disposition), viz., the grace of the Holy Ghost. For the Father indeed is One, but there are two Persons, because there is also the Son; and then there is the third, the Holy Spirit." From--- (Against the Heresy of One Noetus) See it yourself--- http://www.ccel.org/ccel/schaff/anf05/Page_228.html (Top of second column) Origen--- “…he who is regenerated by God unto salvation has to do both with Father and Son and Holy Spirit, and does not obtain salvation unless with the co-operation of the entire Trinity; and…it is impossible to become partaker of the Father or the Son without the Holy Spirit.” From--- (De Principiis 1:3:5) "….nothing in the Trinity can be called greater or less….there is no difference in the Trinity….” From--- (De Principiis 1:3:7) "“…the Holy Spirit [is] reckoned in the Unity of the Trinity, i.e., along with the unchangeable Father and His Son….” From--- (De Principiis 1:3:4) etc etc etc etc. There are loads of other references showing that although the doctrine of the "Trinity" was still in the process of being understood & thought out by the early church, the "early church Fathers" were both quite aware, and absolutely believed, in the basics from which it evolved. Here's the bottom line as I see it--- Those who truly seek the truth will find it. And those who prefer to be deceived, will be.

i am not J W but don't believe in a trinity ...God showed HIMSELF as 2, Yahweh and Holy Spirit in the Beginning=Gen.1-3.HE reveals HIMSELF as being born as "Son" in Isaiah 9:6-7..Jesus was fully human, yet fully Divine...Why did God become man? HE shared our flesh that by God's GRACE HE might taste death for EVERYONE: John 1..Ph.2...Hebrews 2:9.....1 Peter 2:24.... but JW's do not believe Christ was God in that their book changed the wording of John 1 to "a" god...quite different from Bibles.... just one important thing , it is quite an important thing that we make an all out effort that we understand who GOD is: Immanuel="God Among Us" Isaih 44:6&8 assures us only one God... he foresaw God as being "born" to rule!Malachi 3:1 & Is.9:6-7. God HIMSELF stated in OT, HE was a jealous God and aside from HIM , there was no Savior!!! so in my reasoning...what more do we need?? & Jesus(GOD) fullfilled every prophecy foretold to the tee in OT... so, its no wonder there was no teachings of a trinity were never taught....but the Bible does not teach neither that Jesus was "a god" or a mere prophet...think? did u expect God to come here and say "I AM GOD , follow ME?" HE had been there done all this with Israelites..& still they rejected HIM and still so when HE came in the flesh.... just my reasoning of Jesus DIVINESS..."you've seen ME, you've seen the Father....it is weird how the Apostles, filled with the HOLY SPIRIT(GOD) knew who Jesus was after Ascension(FULLFILLMENT) but lots can't understand....they did not teach a trinity...John's book tells who HE was, I AM....The Truth, The Way, & The Life, the Living Water...
