When my daughter joined the marines, she needed to gain fifteen to twenty pounds. To do this she would eat, and then work out. Sit ups, crunches and running. The marines told her the key was to turn the food she was eating into muscle, since muscle weighs more. It did worked. She went from a size 0 to a 3 in about six months.

To burn less energy then consumed. I don't really think there is anything in particular that would work faster, besides those special weight gaining bars.
