you either go to your contacts in your inbox and when the little contact bubble thing pops out, you click on chat (providing its a Gmail contact, or you download Google Talk and use it just as MSN, Yahoo, or AOL.

The client you need for that is Google Talk, and can be downloaded from http://www.google.com/talk/ - the client is ONLY for Microsoft Windows based systems. For Linux or setting up third party messengers, you will need to use the settings given at the http://www.google.com/talk/otherclients.html page.
