  • definitely. Religion is not one of the things humans like compared to style or fashion.
  • I'm sure a lot of people would freak out. People need something to believe in. Religion is that something, for some people.
  • I don't think so. Usually a religion would involve a leader that leads the religion, and it does not have to be a God after all. Some are prophets, leaders, or even emperors as well. People think or follow the same standards as the leader may have done in the past. Even if religion is gone, another one will be created anyways.
  • Man created God out of a need to believe in something more powerful and wise than himself, so no, I don't think that the world could function without religion. Man needs to believe that something better waits for you after you struggle your whole life, and I think that the world would become pretty hopeless and bleak without religion or any Gods to look toward.
  • Not for long. Because Man himself isn't strong enough of an influence to instill values and morals in people.
  • On Michael Crichton's website is a terrific essay, "Environmentalism as Religion," that points out that some things are located so deep in the human psyche that if you try to suppress them in one place they'll just re-emerge in another. The Communists tried, and failed; today's secularists are trying, but they have just adopted environmentalism as a religion, which is why it's impossible to argue with them--their mind is made up and no amount of facts will change that. I can't attach a link. Just google Michael Crichton website, click on "speeches" and go down to "environmentalism as religion."
  • Yes, it would look very much the same as it does now only worse. There would be no holding back the tide of evil. I understand that you will completely disagree with this. lol
  • Not just cope, but thrive.
  • There's a bug in Answerbag, I can't post a reply to steelhamster in the comments, so here it is: It's a slanderous lie to say that only oil-company scientistst disagree that man-made catastrophic climate change (MMCCC) is happening, or that it would be unmanageable, or that there is much that we could do about it, or that what we could do about it would be worth what it costs. If you think science is based on consensus you know nothing about science. Science is based on facts, and one man with one fact can be right when the rest of the world is wrong. Ignaz Semmelweis on obstetric hygiene. Louis Pasteur on abiogenesis. Galileo on whether the earth moves. Copernicus and Kepler on geocentrism. Einstein on relativity. Any scientist who says "the debate is over" is likely to be in the pay of Big Government, because that's where the money is, because studies supporting MMCCC gets all the government grants, because belief in MMCCC enables the government to raise our taxes, become more powerful, and control more aspects of our lives.
  • And here is the proof that scientists who don't believe that "the debate is over" aren't industry stooges: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_scientists_opposing_global_warming_consensus
  • A great short article which is a direct answer to the question: "How I Found God at Columbia University." http://www.benadorassociates.com/article/738 Actually, it might better be titled "Why I found God at Columbia University," but it sure answers the question!
  • Yes, the world could well cope without religion and deities. In fact, the world would be better off if people had to stop justifying their discrimination, biogtry, hatred, and malice through religion/deity.
