  • Macaws eat a varied diet of fresh, wholesome foods from special-diet food pellet, to fruits and veggies, cooked & not. Macaws DO talk! They learn quickly everything from words and sentences, to sounds (cell phone ringers, door bells, etc). They can cost as little as a few hundred, to several thousand US dollars. (That is just the cost of your new FAMILY MEMBER... it does NOT include his/her home (cage), or perches, toys, food, etc, etc. :-) ) Macaws are wonderfully intelligent, loving, social, dependent, forever '5-year-old' (human, child-like) acting, messy, and loveable friends! They require special care, and their diet should be taken seriously. First remember this word... FRESH FRESH FRESH!!! Their diet should be a variety of FRESH, wholesome, and healthy foods. Speak with parrot lovers/handlers/owners (who owns who?) to get more info. Macaws eat fresh veggies, fruit, macaw friendly pellets, nuts- the harder the shell, the better (in the shell, they love breaking them), etc. The list is long. You will make (even COOK) your Macaw meals! Fresh, every day! Cost = hundreds to thousands of dollars. Research your local parrot, exotic bird, and/or Macaw clubs for breeder referrals. These clubs/groups are your best resource for ALL information and assistance with everything Macaw-related! (google search "macaw diet" "macaw breeder" "macaw groups in (your city, state))" "parrot clubs, exotic bird groups, macaws eat?" I hope I've helped! Have a great day!!
  • My Macaw will eat anything he can get, from White Castles, to Healthy Parrot Food. No Chocolate. My guy talks up a storm, laughs, answers the phone and is more like a companion than a pet. He is one messy bird, as they all are. Birds like him cost about $1600, and the cages are also a bundle. Food aint cheap either. They need time and attention. They are not a decoration.
  • They eat a wide variety of seeds, nuts, veggies and fruit. Some people advocate a pellet diet which I used to feed but now I think it's not such a good idea as it can cause problems. Yes some do talk, some species more than others. Scarlet macaws for all their beauty, are okay talkers but not hte smartest macaw. Military macaws are so smart and sometimes it's hard to stop them from talking once they learn. Some of the smaller macaws like the noble are good talkers too and take to potty training really easy. Cost depends on the size and rarity of them and whether they are handraised, breeders, tame, untamed. You can find them from a few hundred dollars to thousands for some of them. They take a great commitment of time and money to keep as a happy healthy pet.
