Ecclesiastes 9:5, 10 and Psalms 146:4, show quite clearly that the dead are not conscious in any way. It's pretty safe to say that any spirit that you do contact is not going to be on the side of good. Spiritualism, contacting the dead or 'spirits', is looked on as a very bad thing. Jehovah's Witnesses strictly avoid Spiritualism in all its forms.

There is no such thing as the dead. There are only souls that live in a physical body and those that don't. Some enlightened individuals understand that this life is only a school of learning and in the span of eternity this life is just the blinking of an eye lid. We lived before we were born and we will return when we leave our physical body. God gave us this Earth to learn our spiritual lessons in the catalyst of a physical body. He allowed angels to communicate with us, as well as loved ones that have passed over in order to keep us in touch with our origins and our spiritual quest. The only evil is not knowing that there is a life after death and that not knowing this prevents us from worshiping God 'in truth and in spirit'.
