"Red Rum (bay gelding, May 3, 1965–October 18, 1995. Sire: Quorum, dam: Mared) was a racehorse who achieved an unmatched historic treble when he won the Grand National in 1973, 1974 and 1977. He came second in 1975 and 1976."

Makybe Diva....only horse to ever win three Melbourne Cups....consecutive too...along with Phar Lap... and Red Rum (I read his biography - what a gret horse), how about Rain Lover and Kingston Town?

And then there is Amani. Amani you ask???? Yes, a great bay gelding in retirement and currently living in my front paddock. He is the bestest ever!

    RED RUM, no contest

His first two wins of the Grand National he was ridden by Brian Fletcher who for some strange reason was then stood down to make way for Tommy Stack Stack rode him into second place in 75 , 76 and a third win in 1977.

Res Rum is buried at the finishing post of the Grand national at Aintree and a statue in his honour has been place there.

He was bought as a selling plater and trained by Ginger McCain in Liverpool he used to train on the sands.

Red Rum never really shone in any other races but at Anfield he was King

Flat racing I would imagine Nijinsky

    G'day u,

    Thank you for your question.

Internationally, it would be Secretariate and Red Rum. In Australia, Phar Lap and Makybe Diva.

    Regards

Sea Bird II is the greatest thoroughbred racehorse there has ever been. He made all other horses seem ordinary. He is known as Paramount Champion. There is no higher accolade than this.

I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO DOUBT WHATSOEVER WHO THE GREATEST RACEHORSE WAS
...SEA BIRD II. THIS FRENCH COLT WON THE EPSOM DERBY AND PRIX DE L'ARC DE TRIOMPHE IN 1965 IN A COMMON CANTER. NO HORSE WAS GOOD ENOUGH TO EXTEND HIM. HE WAS QUITE SIMPLY THE MOST PHENOMENAL RACEHORSE TO GRACE THE TURF ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD.

In later years, Secretariat by slight margin. A devastating record setter who if trained a bit more carefully and not run when injured or ill very likely would have only lost his first race when bumped and held up by the jockey. His records speak for themselves.

I also agree that during the 30's, Seabiscuit was incredible once fitted with the correct group around him. He was a smallish horse carrying huge weights and many times running injured. Great horse.

American thoroughbred, hands down Man O' War. An American icon, the grandfather of horse racing, and great sire. Secretariat was gifted with a heart 1 and 1/2 times the size of a normal horse heart, yet he still lost 5 races. As far as ability, Secretariat was king, but Man O' Wars' spirit took over where his ability ended. Man O' War is the supreme ruler of the sport. His only loss was a fluke because he started running the opposite direction around the track. Even so, he nearly caught Upset at the wire after he got turned around. No other thoroughbred compares to Big Red.

Red Rum achieved an unmatched historic treble when he won the Grand National in 1973, 1974 and 1977. In 1973 he beat the great Australian chaser, Crisp who carried 23 pounds more than Red Rum.

For me it has to be Sea Bird II. He was the best horse I've ever seen , there isn't another horse who can compare with him. Sea Bird was perfection and you can't improve on perfection.
