  • maybe thats a bad career choice...
  • i think its probably the wrong career to get into if you faint at the sight of blood. maybe you could try some sort of hypnotherapy
  • Ive got a few friends that are nurses. They say you just get used to it. Its different when its someone you dont know's blood, and different when its a job, and when you HAVE to deal with it. Just dont panic, take deep breaths and it should come to you. My other friend told me that she used to throw up regularly on her shifts for the first few months!
  • If you subject yourself to something enough, there is a possibility that eventually you will become desensitized... If changing your career options isn't an option, you could try spending more time around blood?
  • i think you should try to be one of thoes nurses for dentists or something but yeh thats harsh
  • my mom's cousin is a nurse too and yeah she faint as soon as the blood gets in the sight.. but she got used of it.. and i know you too so don't worry, exposure with it will help you over come fainting with blood.
  • Sorry to hear that but i am a nurse and there will be LOTS of blood, not quite sure how you will manage unless you have some hypnotherapy! :)
  • This may sound stupid, but rent out a bunch of gruesome horror movies from your local video store and force yourself to watch each one the whole way through. That should desensitise you to some extent (make sure to include "Braindead" in that list). Also, although I'm sure you've already done quite a bit of this, research the properties and uses of blood on the net. Perhaps education in the subject can help you understand what it is exactly about blood that makes you sick.
  • Thanks for all the answers, even if some of them such as maybe thats a bad career choice; for that i reply its not that i dont like the sight of blood its just that my body doesnt allow me to continue standing if i see it . . if you get what i mean. As for the others thanks for the advice hypnotherapy sounds like a good idea, i watch a mass amount of gory films and im fine with them, i will not give up nursing because of it and i will try to be exposed to more blood and see if that helps . . .Thanks
  • hmmm...a nurse who doesnt like blood. wrong career choice babe.
  • why dont you train to be an xray technician
  • LIke people said, you need something like immersion therapy, where you repeatedly expose yourself to it. Also, if you go here, http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=3004908 , it has this tip for some sort of leg thing that you can do that might prevent fainting. Besides this, they say any muscle-tensing action (pressing your knees together, squeezing a stress ball) can help prevent fainting too.
  • I remember the day i dicided to switch my major to nursing. I was in the same situation as you. I fainted at the sight of blood, so what i did was look at a TON of videos of nurses giving IV's and taking blood samples. You just get used to it after a while. Now, im fine.
  • Hi ya, I suffer from the same thing, I have been a volunteer member of Saint John's Ambulance for about 3 months now and I have to admit that I have become less and less affected by the sight of blood. Keep to what you want to do and you prove everyone wrong! I read on another forum that it is your body is reacting to the sight of blood and believes that it is yours, the heart responds to this and acts as if it is yours, your brain picks up on it and tells your body to shut down to help the body “heal”. I don’t remember the site but I will try to find it and post a link to it on here… Chris Long
  • I have the same problem and have found some relief in the fact that I'm not the only one with this issue. I wanted to be a veternarian for a long time, but could not get over this blood issue. So I got into ultrasound. Well....today I saw a breast biopsy and had to leave in the middle of the exam before passing out. I've read a lot about "vasovagal syncope" which helped me understand what my body is doing to me. I've read a few things that say some use beta-blockers to treat the reaction. Google "vasovagal syncope"...I think it may be helpful. Hope we overcome! :)
  • i had the same problem, I work for the RED Cross and fainted during the training, ifind its not looking at blood but talking about it. i watched a lot of vids on youtube that invlove blood, like operations and starting IV's.
  • Two words...Killing spree...But the time you have dismembered a few, the blood won't bother you anymore...
