Yes there is a difference. http://www.medieval.org/emfaq/misc/voices.html http://cnx.rice.edu/content/m12381/latest/ What is the definition of a mezzo soprano? Just an alto with a soprano's attitude :)

well i think there is a huge difference! i am a mezzo soprano..and I know, that at times ppl have tried to have me sing alot.. and although i have a little bit of a deeper/richer sounding voice than a higher range soprano, i have some difficulties reaching down to an alto voice, i tend to either sing higher or lower as a tenor. As mezzo sopranos we have a higher range than alotos, we are middle soprano!

Roughly, the alto voice is lower than the mezzo soprano, though many women have a choice of how to describe themselves. Generally, singers choose between the terms based on the specific kind of sound they have -- what musicians call the "color" of the voice. A warm, velvety voice with strong low notes will call herself an alto, while a brilliant voice with easy high notes will call herself a mezzo. It also depends what kinds of roles she prefers to sing. If she likes to sing roles known as mezzo roles, a singer might bill herself as a mezzo every if she has great low notes. And vice versa. -- Josepha Haden, http:www.josephahaden.com

Mezzo-soprano is between alto and soprano, or "half-soprano"
