It depends which of his relatives he was arguing with. If it were his parents, I'd get involved and try to play peacemaker. They're both reasonable people, and it won't come back to bite me. If it's his sisters, forget it. Wouldn't touch it with an eleven-foot pole.

Quietly stand by my spouse in support. But not say anything unless someone directs a comment at me.

It is a difficult situation. It all depends if your wife welcomes your intervention or not. Personally, in similar situation I have stayed out and have avoided additional complications with political relatives.
