When some says, "I came from a humble background...", does that mean that they came from the country side or ........?

    1) Marked by meekness or modesty in behavior, attitude, or spirit; not arrogant or prideful.
    2) Showing deferential or submissive respect: a humble apology.
    3) Low in rank, quality, or station; unpretentious or lowly: a humble cottage.

    Definition 3 is relevent here, a Humble Background is one that is that is low in quality, ie Poor, unfortunate or broken emotionally.

    Humble Background is a much nicer way of saying it.
