You could ask, but I doubt they will tell the truth. Take the dog to the vet, and they can usually give an estimate. But if there are no records, it's going to be an estimate. It greatly depends on how well the dog has been cared for in the past.

By determining how fast he can learn a new trick if at all. If you try to play fetch and Rover displays a lot of apathy about the whole thing, then we're talking about one old dog here. Other health symptoms such as wheezing, manginess might give a pooch's age away.
