"In early December 1891, Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian physical education student and instructor at YMCA Training School[1] (today, Springfield College) in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA, sought a vigorous indoor game to keep his students occupied and at proper levels of fitness during the long New England winters." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basketball So about 25 1/2 years. Sorry, I read '1981'! 115 1/2 years.

Ok, this is what i heard on some television program a long time ago.... They say that the someone came up with the idea and the had a peach basket with a ball and they played basically the same way it is played now, just that they have little or no rules like now. Then every basket scored, someone had to be sitting up wherever the basket was and wait for them to score it and he/she would retrieve it. Then some smart person came up with the idea of cutting the peach basket below and playing the game without delay and so on... A man by the name of James Naismith invented it in 1881. It grew from no basic rules to 13 rules, e.g. not allowing dribbling, to many rules, e.g. allowing jump stops and three pointers. So, your answer is in 1891 actually..... You are talking 116 years.......
