I imagine McDonalds would like to suggest there is a science to it! For my partner (who has more in a burger than what I do), he likes me to do it in this order... Cheese, burger, onion, ketchup, beetroot, lettuce. The cheese gets melted by the hot burger (which is nice) and the sauce tastes best when close to the burger. The only thing I would change for your order is to put the ketchup on the burger. Since taste is so personal and subjective I would suggest there is no science and only preference. :)

Bun Mayo tomato lettuce cheese meat bun

Sauces on buns, lettuce next to sauce to prevent the tomato from making the bun soggy. Those go on bottom. Then I love addons on top, onions, mushrooms, avocado, bacon, BBQ sauce, all that is top material.

the only 'science' to it is for presentation purposes-alternating from green lettuce to red tomatoe to white onion to green pickle-for flavor is really best to serve close with veggies on top and the sauce between the cheese and burger if that is the purpose of the sauce-if its pupose is to flavor the veggies you would want it on top of them so it goes down and through them--chef for a living-hope this helps---smile and enjoy the day--cool question

I think so, but it is more just as study of mechanics. A bun will absorb liquids where lettuce, onion cheese won't. So I put the mayo, ketchup, mustard, relish etc. on the buns. I also slightly flatten the center of the buns before dressing to conform to the onion slice & burger (helps to fit in mouth too). The burger has the cheese melted to it so I put the lettuce on the bottom bun followed with the burger cheese side down (no slip w/cheese)then the onion slice & second burger if desired cheese side up, tomato & last bun!!! Ahhhh, the Anticipation!!! John

The creation of a burger is a very personal thing, and rarely will anyone agree unless it's a fast-food burger that uses a set procedure (but we're not talking about those). Personally, I go: Bottom bun, mustard, beef patty, cheese (several slices, please), second beef patty (if available), second layer of cheese (again, if available), pickle, onions, chili sauce (if making a chili burger), lettuce, mayonaise (or ranch dressing), top bun. I never have ketchup (too sweet) or tomato (can't stand them) on burgers.
