  • In England it is not called Grade school so there would be no need to say a grade just what year you are currently attending. It basically ,means the same thing just a different way of expressing facts.
  • Have you not noticed how so many cultures talk backwards instead of just putting things in order. It's because Americans know how to say things in order and not backwards. How is it the Spanish say things like instead of saying "Open the door " they would say something like " Door the open " It gets really crazy sometimes. I guess the English language is more flowing.
  • Because they are different Countries with separate education systems. I assume Grade comes from grade schools and in the UK we call our schools by a different names, just like other words are different in Britain and America, e.g pavement- sidewalk, boot-trunk, bumper-fender and crisps-chips. By the way Year 1 to 11 is used throughout the UK not just England.
  • It's all part of the conspiracy we both have - we may share a common language but half the time we don't understand each other.
  • Probably the same reason they queue instead of getting in line, they say things are dear instead of expensive, and I think they say half nine instead of nine thirty. Mate...cheers...etc. The list goes on and on. BTW I still say it's "authorize" not "authorise." My spell checker agrees.
  • Firstly its throughout Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England that this system is used Secondly it's because we have two schools we go to, primary school and secondary school. Primary education starts at 4/5 and lasts until 10/11 and that goes P1-P7 ('P' standing for 'Primary'). After primary school one continues on to secondary education that is from ages 11-16 compulsory or 11-18 if one wants to continue on with tests to get into university. In secondary education it starts from Form 1 to Higher 6th. If one wants to go leave at 16 then one can go straight into full time employment OR college education which is more free, to do either tests to go to university or do vocational jobs i.e. plumbing. I hope this was of some help and wasn't too confusing!
