They originated in the port city of Genoa, where the material from Nimes was converted into a hard wearing fabric for clothing sailors. Bleu de Genes, the French phrase for the blue of Genoa, became corrupted into jeans. So technically, we should call them genes (the same spelling as the segments of genetic code).
