  • It may have been due to the fact that he died of Tuberculosis. Cemeteries back then buried criminals and folks who died of communicable diseases further away for obvious reasons. What is really odd about Poe is that his dark novel "The FAll of the House of Usher" scared folks so much that there were those who bought caskets with ropes that could be pulled inside the casket just in case the "deceased" woke up from some form of sleeping condition like narcolepsy. The string or rope was attached to a bell where some "live" person could hear it.
