  • If it's trained then there's no need 2 keep it on a leash. If it's crazy then U BET!!!
  • In my personal experience - I have never met a husky that could be let off leash in an un-fenced area. Some are better than others, but they all seem to have this stubborn "I'm gonna do what I wanna do" attitude... so when you tell them to Come, they look at you and you can see them deciding not to obey... then they go on their merry way, doing whatever they like. I'm sure there are some out there that do just fine, but with such an expensive dog (and such a beloved part of your family) would you want to risk it running off, getting lost, getting hurt, being taken home by someone else, etc? Personally, I wouldn't. So - since the law requires dogs to be on leash anyway - just keep your dog (of whatever kind) on a leash except when it's in a securely fenced area (like your yard or a dog park).
  • Huskies are notorious for loving to run and they will do it without you. Yes, it is better if they remain leashed outside of a fenced pen. If you could find a nice long beach or wide open field, maybe a snowfield, then it would be nice for him to get his freedom for awhile. Malamutes are better for going off leash. They can be trained for hiking by your side rather well.
  • i have 2 husky's 1 male and 1 female. my female can be left off her leash when ever it doesnt matter but the male is another story no matter what he will run. the one trick i do have with my male is i dont take him off the leash but i will drop it and let him run if we are in a field or an open place.
  • My whippets are the same way, they are running dogs too and no matter how well trained they are (which they are), if they see a rabbit they are GONE. I call it "legs faster than the brain." It's not a matter of training, it's pure instinct. I knew huskies like to run too, but I didn't get the connection until I saw your question. +4
  • I've had two husky's and one I would trust off a leash and the other not so much. I had one who acted very much like a normal dog and came when you called him and fetched and was pretty normal as far as dog behavior and I trusted him off a leash. I had another female however that had a personality much more like a cat is the only way to describe it. Very independant, Did what she wanted and outside of an occasional show of affection seemed very aloof and unconcerned about anyone but herself. I didn't trust her off a leash and even in a fenced yard she would tunnel out. In the house she curled up by the door and rarely moved from that spot except to eat. She did like riding n the truck but other than that was not a very affectionate animal. I've had two so in my experience there is a 50-50 chance you will get one you can trust off a leash :)
  • Huskies are movers and shakers... The breed is very active and energetic. Discipline is mandatory for this breed but I cannot see that this is any more pressing than another strong willed breed. You need to focus their attention on you or a daily job that burns up their excess energy or mentally challenges them. You need to find the right buttons and all will be well.
