I don't think it is necessary, because some people may have a lot to say in their answer and thus need as much space as possible. They may also need space to post a long list of links, and imposing a character limit would be unfair on them in my opinion. Furthermore, an answer is different to a question and a comment for the reason that it is nearly always a longer piece of writing

It seems like most questions these days are things like "Do you like Johnny Depp?" Answering that doesn't require a lot of space. I think most people are good about expressing their opinion or offering information in a concise manner, so I don't really see the need for a limit on answer space.

It's still needed. Some people post really long-winded answers so they would need to post in two or more answers if there was a character limit. The answers could get separated and hard to find if someone rates one part but not the other.

Nah, I think it's good the way it is. Some questions aren't so simple to answer and the answers are really really long and involved. The long answers are usually the good ones. I say that's a pretty good freedom.

No. It would just encourage users to post multiple answers which, in turn, would negate the point system for simply one accurate, helpful answer. Posi- and nega-trolls would have a field day!
