I suspect you may have killed a lot of brains cells; I'm sure "drying out" will improve you to the point where you may not notice the difference, but the fact remains that alcohol does kill brain cells and you may notice a lack in your brain's functional power.

Alcohol has been shown to help prevent some diseases later in life, but that's with the 'A drink a day' method. I had to re-read the question: 5-20 drinks a day??? Do you drive? If so you can never be sober. I don't know how long you have been drinking like that but doing it for any longer than a week will have a guaranteed negative impact on your liver, brain, organs, blood, etc etc. Your liver and kidneys need to filter all that poison out - yes, alcohol is a poison. That's why you can get alcohol poisoning, etc. I will tell you right now (despite my lack of a medical degree) that your brain will not fully recover anytime in the near future if you quit today. It could take years to see any improvement as your body tries to rebuild what has been killed or deformed in your brain due to heavy drinking. Quit today, hope for the best. Stick to pop... Hope this helps, Good luck

I am not a doctor and this is a doctor question, but I have known some alcoholics and am medically trained. If you have done permanent neurological damage, you shall never recover that particular part of the brain. However, other parts of the brain often compensate. I have known some who drink much worse than you describe, and for years, and recover very nicely (others are vegetables)... over time and complete abstinance. I cannot guarantee that you shall for everyone is different. You do need to stop with the binging and heavy daily use. That always ends badly. I have the feeling that though you state that for 2.5 weeks you have been drinking like this, you have probably been drinking much longer or you would not be able to put that much down and be having this severe symptoms. You also face niceties like cirrhosis and alcoholic cardiomyopathy.

I am afraid that you hold down a job, drive back and forth to work and are a ticking time bomb. That much alcohol consumption is dangerous for you and potentially hazardous to others. Seek help with your substance abuse as soon as possible. Let us know how it goes.
