  • As far as I've ever heard, onions are very good for you. I've never heard of anything harmful about them except for gas and bad breath!
  • The chemical which causes this when the onion is cut open is called propenyl cysteine sulphoxide. It also gives a lot of the flavour associated with onion. This chemical is sulphur based, so a large amount of it may be harmful to you, but as with most things, the presence of it in the onion is in very small amounts. Getting enough to harm you would not be easy. Since humans have been cultivating and eating onions for a very long time, anecdotal evidence would point to onions (and their chemical components) bot being harmful to a person.
