Because they are not part of the USof AMERICA. Whey do americans not call themselves Mexican, same continent! How about Germans start calling themselves Euro-French!
-
Because they're NOT Americans. However, I'd be willing to bet that they would acknowledge that they ARE North Americans.
-
Probably because they feel that the citizens of the United States have hijacked the word for their exclusive use. All the following expressions are in common use in the USA to specifically mean pertaining to the USA, not American: as American as apple pie all-American the American Dream American plan African-American Anglo-American Irish-American Native American un-American In addition whenever the word American is used, whether by US citizens or people from elsewhere, the meaning is generally understood to be 'from the USA'. Perhaps if the founders of the country had had the good sense to choose a name for the country that permitted you to be named after your specific country, rather than after the continent in which your country happens to be we wouldn't face this dilemma.

Canadians are North American. That is not the same thing as being "American". Many Canadians will be offended if you call them American. Canadians do not wish to be thought of in the same category as Americans, as a lot of places in the world think negatively of them.
-
Canadian is the opposite of American.!
-
The term American has been co-opted to mean a person from the United States of America. As such, we are not Americans, we are Canadians. We are North Americans or even people from the Americas, but the common usage of the term Americans is synonymous with the term person from the USA. Canadians values, culture and of course citizenship makes us Canadians, not Americans.

Screw it, no more comments with peons. The real reason is simple. We Are Not American. We don't have much in common other than some fast food joints. Some Americans might...say we have something in common. The smart ones know better. There is nothing we share, culturally. There are things we've adopted from America as is the same all over. When I saw a MC Donalds in Cairo... ok..that's sick.

These kinds of questions are why Americans are hated !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
