Judaism is a religion not an ethnicity! Hebrew would be the ethnicity. There are also many non-Hebrews that are Jewish. Such as Sammy Davis Jr. And you certainly would not say that his enthicity is Jewish! He's black! (Or at least he was before he died.) I find it funny that someone would classify ethnicity by religion. Very odd indeed.

She is ethnically Jewish. For those of you not well-acquainted with Judaism, "Jewish" means 3 separate things: (1) Religiously Jewish, how most Christians in America perceive "Jewish", since Christians attend multi-ethnic churches. (2) Ethnically Jewish. Most Jews are Ashkenazi or Sephardi. "Hebrew" is a *language*. (3) Culturally Jewish. Cultural Jews were raised in a Jewish home, and likely celebrate the holidays. A "non-religious Jew" would be 2 & 3, but not 1. An adopted child raised Jewish would be 1 & 3, but not 2. I'm not sure how Sammy Davis Jr. was raised, he might only be 1, but not 2 or 3. So saying that Stacy's ethnicity is "Jewish" is absolutely correct, although the technical term would be "Ashkenazi" (Eastern European Jews). Jews mostly only married other Jews for most of the last 1500 years or so in Europe, so they are an ethnic group. (She's probably not Sephardi, Spanish/Portuguese Jewish, they are a smaller group.) "Israeli" signifies a citizen of the country of Israel. There are Israeli Arabs and Israeli Christians. Apparently, Confedgrand didn't read my answer well. "Catholic" and "Baptist" would compare to definition 1 only. A Catholic might be ethnically (definition 2) Irish or Italian or Polish, a Baptist might be ethnically English or French or Scottish. But for Jews, the overlap between the two is extremely large, so the word is often used for either one. As for "Hebrew", that term is not commonly used by Jews themselves, much as "Negro" is not used by African-Americans. They just use the terms "Jew" or "Ashkenazi". You will never find a rabbi talking about how his fellow Hebrews are doing, or about the Hebrew race. Do an Amazon search on the word "Hebrew" and see how many "Hebrew race" hits you get: None. Now search on "Ashkenazi" and see what you get.

Jewish does mean several things; however, Jewish people say that both their ethnicity and their religion is Jewish. While this may not be politcally correct, there is some reason behind it. Jews have been persecuted for thousands of years, and the Jewish state of Israel was not created until 1948. All of the moving around that Jews had to do left them without a cultural commonality, and the state of Israel is too young to have Jews say they are Israeli unless they really are from Israel. The only common thing that Jews shared was their religion, so instead of saying that we are "Irish" or "Russian", many Jews say they are "Jewish"

"Jewish" is not an ethnicity....there are Russian Jews, Polish Jews, there are even Jewish Indians in India. "Jewish" or "Jew" is a word that describes the person that practises the religion called Judaism. I think that whomever was trying to answer the question was trying to say she is "Hebrew" or "Israeli" which gives more of an idea of her national origin.

Judiasm is the religion and race of my people. We have been wandering for thousands of years with no place to call home, until recently. Therefore we ARE defined by our religion. We came from an area that was ours, it was taken away and we were spread through out the world. Some stayed some left, We couldn't call ourselves Israeli because we were forced out. So the only other thing that united every single person is our religion. We are JEWS from JUDEA, accept it it is a race and a religion. I am so sick of these all knowing Christians, acting like they have the right to answer questions on Judiasm. Shalom and Kol Tuv.
