Britain didn't lose...

Hitler's resentment and lust for power got him in the war, and brought him to take on two fronts at once, in which he could not prevail. i think it is doubtful either England (or Russia) could have own without US aid in it's various forms, and the grace of God.

Operation Sealion (invasion of England) was wargamed by the Brits after the war, and apparently it had no chance of succeeding (eg, see Wikipedia). It's true that the Soviets fought 75 or 80% of the war against the Germans (in terms of number of months against number of regiments), which kept them kind of busy, but it becomes unrealistic to conjecture what would have happened without the German-Soviet war. So they wouldn't have "lost", but Britain wouldn't have been able to invade Europe - the US provided about 60-70% of the manpower in Western Europe (dunno where I read this). If Germany had developed the A-bomb the UK would have had to capitulate, but luckily they never got too close to that.

Britain stopped the German advances via air control in the Battle of Britain. Germany could not afford to attempt an invasion, they would have lost so much man power in a failed attempt that they would have been too vulnerable to a counter invasion/rebellion. Hitler, apart from being an evil racist, was a very intelligent military tactition who was able, in most cases, to see the larger picture (one big exception was his attempt at invading Russia).
