The earliest piece of fiction I was able to locate information about was published in The Science Schools Journal in 1888, a journal that Wells edited and co-founded with some of his friends at the Normal School of Science in London, a 3-part speculative story/essay titled The Chronic Argonauts, which later formed the basis of his first novel The Time Machine published in 1895.

The first short story published professionally by H.G. Wells was The Stolen Bacillus, published in June 1894 by the Pall Mall Budget magazine.
