    Prior to 1863, several individuals created forms of fencing that could be considered barbed wire. None of these creations ever reached the mass market. By 1863, Michael Kelly developed a type of fence with points affixed with twisted strands of wire. However, since he never patented it, some people claim he can't be labelled as the inventor.
