Women have different reasons as to why they actually remove the hair, there's no 'one Universal' reason. I do it because I hate how hair on my legs looks and feels. I suppose a lot of that is conditioning from society, women are presented with images of hair less legs being the 'norm' and 'ideal'. As for the actual method of hair removal, shaving is relatively quick, painless and cheap. Waxing hurts and you have to let the hair grow to a certain length, creams can be messy (and smelly!)...I for one am allergic to most of them. Shaving doesn't present any of these issues, except the hair does grow back quite quickly.

I'm not sure why it started other than , a boy might bump into us and touch our leg. lol or Just because hairy legs on women isn't very attractive . Now just a daily routine.

It's faster than doing cornrows and the those beads would look finny uner pantyhose. Okay, I only shave if I'm going to be wering hose. If not and it's summer time, well, I just don'thve much hair growing anymore and don't need to bother. SO no more rashes and cuts and such. As yougorw older, they hair really does get less and less....except on your chin LOL!

personally for me id like to wear a skirt and have smooth legs. I dont care what others do or think but i prefer to look good shaven.

I don't know. I think that Haitian women don't shave their legs. Maybe leg hair is beautiful to men in Haiti.

Cause our moms moms shaved and taght our moms and our moms taught us that this is what society prefers so we followed suit and then we as mothers who have daughter pass it along once again to the younger generation.

I started shaving because one summer I kept getting infections in every cut or scratch I got on my legs. My swim coach told me the hair tends to carry dirt and bacteria and if I tried shaving my legs, they might not get infected so much. It worked. I keep shaving my legs because I prefer the way it feels. It's really not about the social pressure. There's plenty of social pressure to wear makeup, tweeze your eyebrows and wear scanty clothing, and I don't do those things. Why would I shave my legs for "them"? I just love the way freshly shaved legs feel. Aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh.

Because it's disgusting if we don't. A woman's significant other shouldn't have to feel like he's touching his own legs. Hopefully he doesn't find anything sexy or appealing about his legs. Part of being feminine to to have soft, smooth legs.

Why do men think hair on legs is less sexy then with out? That's why a lot shave them, same reason we do 80% of our personal care. People feel better when they look good, and looking good is defined by the times and personal preference. Most woman stop shaving after they are married unless going out with their legs showing, or as listed above, some like the smooth feeling.

We shave because its apart of the lexicon of our society same reason men are paid more per hour for the same position or how we dress, the way in which we stye our hair or even how we are treated. Like many other things that are transmited from our four fathers, we have the privlidge or shaving daily.

well i personally like the feel of smooth legs. it makes me feel sexy. Guys have hairy legs it looks very attractive on muscular guy legs. but others not really. i think guys with shaved legs just look gay

It started in magazines. Advertising in women's magazines in 1915. Started with underarms and then went to legs. They said it waas hygenienic, but then why don't men shave? Its kind of emabarressing that women shave because we have succombed to marketing. Marketing done by men. Its my own personal theory that it is to dimorphise us. Men more manly, and women less manly. This also about the same time that women started to vote and date. Dating came about in the 1920's. Crazy.

It's a male dominance thing - they are forced to by a male dominant society and they do not question it. Females tend to do what male dominant society directs them to do. When you ask a female why she shaves, invariably she'll state "because I have to ".Women who don't shave tend to be independent thinkers and don't think with a " clone " mentality.

Are women still "forced" to shave their legs? I missed that. I rarely shave mine. One in a while I'll feel like being a bit more smooth, but honestly it doesn't make much difference, since I only have a small amount of leg hair. I can't imagine that anyone would look that closely at my legs to see if they're shaved or not. And if they care, well, the phrase "get a life" comes to mind. Same thing with armpits. I mean, who's gonna look? If I'm wearing something particularly girly, I probably will shave, because it completes the look, but really, do people actually care? It's 2008, for crying out loud. :)

Women shave their legs to look younger. Hairless legs give the women the look of a preteen. Just as many things women do (or used to do) like accenting narrow waists or breast size or swaying hips, by wearing heels, shaving excentuates a key difference between mature men and women: hairy bodies. It also helps that 20th century razors make the process easier and that advertising has accelerated and magnified the style.

To attract a guy, because we were raised that way, or to fit in. We might act like a lot of other girls as some would say the "clone mentality" but in some countries a majority of the women there don't shave their legs, so they too have a "clone mentality". We do it because it gets the results that we want compared to a guy(potential mate) being disgusted. We are raised by the media and our parents sometimes to be beautiful. That is the only way that you won't end up alone. Also I can't stand to have unshaved legs, it just feels wrong to me. Either way the choice is up to the woman, its her preference to decide whether to please guys/herself or just herself in the "physical department". p.s. Sorry its so long and please don't interpret my opinions as an "anti-feminist", either way I don't care what a woman chooses because in the end she is the one who is going to have to live with her choices!

Yep in the USA women didn't really start shaving anything until WWII. Betty Grable's poster with the nylons started it partly and that fashion's changed thus more leg and underarm exposure.

I'm a guy and I shave my legs because they look better that way when I'm wearing a skirt or a dress. I assume that women shave their legs for the same reason
