  • In the USA, Customs, FTC, and USDA have "country of origin" labelling requirements, as do similar departments of many other countries. For example, here is the FTC requirement for the use of the "Made in USA" label: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/buspubs/madeusa.htm
  • I know this doesn't directly answer the question, but the country of origin is extremely important to many consumers. This might be because they feel patriotically inclined to support the industry of their own country (eg "Buy British") or it might be because certain countries have a particularly poor human rights record, a political system they disagree with or are known for treating clothing workers badly, and they feel it would be ethically wrong to support the industries of those countries.
